Manfred Eicher and ECM have won the DownBeat Critics Poll for the second year in a row. An apt moment, then, to look at some of the recordings that have lately pleased the international press. We quote below from recent reviews.

Eicher and ECM win DownBeat 2009 Award

Echoing the results of last year’s poll, Manfred Eicher and ECM are voted Producer of the Year and Label of the Year in the 57th Annual DownBeat Critics Poll. This double-win is announced in the August issue of the venerable US jazz magazine (founded 1934).
The awards arrive in ECM’s 40th anniversary year. It was in the autumn of 1969 that Eicher founded his label; seven years later, in 1976, he won DownBeat's Top Producer award for the first time.
The 57th Critics Poll includes ECM musicians past and present in almost all of its categories, with Keith Jarrett taking first place slots for Top Pianist and Best Jazz Group (the ‘Standards’ trio with Gary Peacock and Jack DeJohnette). Steve Swallow is, once again, #1 in the Electric Bass category, and old friends Bill Frisell, Gary Burton and Chick Corea are also first-place winners.

L’année commence en grand avec ce disque enregistré à New York par Enrico Rava. Il y a un cas Rava : ce trompettiste de vaste stature, sans doute le plus intéressant d’Europe avec Palle Mikkelborg, joue mieux que jamais de son instrument, contrairement à la règle qui veut que les lèvres s’altèrent avec l’âge. Le son magnifiquement projeté devient de plus en plus émouvant, le style s’est épuré, il ne rappelle plus Miles Davis que par la mélancolie et l’absence de vibrato, une sorte d’intériorité pensive, sans la moindre pose.

The beauty of Mostly Coltrane is that while the album is, indeed, reverential to the spirit of Coltrane, stylistically it’s all Kuhn and his quartet. … Kuhn’s motivic ability to build solos from the smallest of building blocks has always been a strength, and here he excels at taking music so strongly associated with Coltrane that it’s difficult to imagine anyone else playing it. … Mostly Coltrane is the ideal homage. There’s no shortage of the intrepid exploratory spirit that’s made Coltrane a cultural icon for generations of musicians and fans, but equally there’s no missing the personal qualities that define Kuhn and his group.
