A new firmware version of the Kii THREE is now tested and available.
All speakers shipped from now on will come with this version pre-installed, of course.
If you have a pair of Kii THREEs with an older firmware version, please contact your dealer for a free update.
Here's an overview of the added features in the new version:
Low-latency mode
WHAT?
The low-latency mode is an optional setting implemented to reduce the delay of the playback due to the signalprocessing done in the DSP.
WHY?
If you for example also use your Kii THREE for playback of the audio from your TV. Running in "normal latency" mode, you might not be able to achieve a perfect lip-sync of your audio in relation to the picture from the settings on your TV alone.
The low-latency mode on the Kii THREE lowers the absolute latency down to 1,03 ms (even on the analog input), so lip-sync can now easily be set on your TV.
HOW?
The delay of the playback is mostly stemming from filter corrections, which take quite some time to calculate, especially in the low frequencies. Low-latency mode is therefore missing the most timeconsuming phase correction filters and you might be able to hear reduced detail, punch and definition in the lower frequencies. Yet the special cardioid radiation pattern of the THREE down to 40Hz is still fully intact and the overall sound is still maintained.
Yet in a regular music playback situation please make sure the THREE is always set to "normal latency" mode, to achieve the best performance.
OPERATION?
Switching between normal and low-latency mode is simply done by briefly pressing the P/R button below the channel switch (L/analog/R) on the connector panel of the speakers.
If you see one front LED light up red, you´re in low-latency mode.
If you see both front LEDs light up red, you´re back to normal mode.
LATENCY SPECS?
If you are curious about the exact latency figures of the Kii THREE, here they are.
In low-latency mode:
depending on the use of analog or digital input and audio signal samplerate the latency varies between 860us and 1540us
(yes, that´s microseconds, so quite below 2 milliseconds)
In normal playback mode:
the latency is roughly around 90 milliseconds
Standby mode
WHAT?
When not in use all electronic devices that are permanently hooked up to mains power, should enter a standby mode after some time to save energy.
WHY?
The power consumption drops below 0,5 watts in standby,
which helps to preserve the built-in electronics, our planet and your electricity bill.
OPERATION?
There's no manual operation necessary at all.
If the speaker doesn't detect any incoming signal, analog or digital, it will automatically switch into standby mode after 15 minutes of silence.
Upon detection of any audio signal present on the input, the Kii THREE will automatically boot up within a few seconds and start playback.
